Newsom recall election will cost more than $215 million, state estimates

Loki-Don

There have been 55 CA Gov recall attempts in the past 107 years. Recalls are as regular in the state as wildfires.

graveybrains

> The 2020 California wildfire season, part of the 2020 Western United States wildfire season, was a record-setting year of wildfires in California. By the end of the year, **9,639 fires** had burned 4,397,809 acres I love Wikipedia 😂

TheTranscendent1

And of those, only 1 were successful (Gray Davis) unless I’m reading my source wrong. Looks like that was the only one to ever even qualify for the ballot and it brought us Arnold.

Parking_Which

so who is actually running against him other than Caitlyn Jenner?

czaranthony117

Bigger name, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. I'm not promoting anyone but that's the one that is more of a threat to Newsom. Jenner is some celebrity. Faulconer is the mayor of the 2nd largest city in the state. As is the nature of the corporate press, it is more financially lucrative to promote the idea of a celebrity running... you get more clicks.. I'd like to see our guy make a go of it: Jeff Hewit. He's the only libertarian in CA elected to some big office. He's on the board of county supervisors for Riverside County and beat out some establishment republican for that spot.

successiseffort

Just ask congress for the money they have been pissing trillions for months/s

GreyInkling

I've yet to be convinced this isn't just petty right wing lunacy.

conspicuous_lemon

It probably is for a non-trivial number of people, but I'd be happy to kick that guy out of office anytime. He vetoed a measure which would have allowed cities in CA to implement voting methods other than first past the post, which is a sure sign he's as corrupt as they come. He knows how he got into power and doesn't want to give it up by allowing people to vote honestly. Outside of the standard right wing opposition there's also the terrible handling of covid restrictions and the vaccine rollout. It's easy to forget now that we're just about to open everything back up but that's where a lot of the recent momentum came from.

VERYberry_44

It isn’t. I come from a very blue family and in a fairly blue area. Most of the signees re disaffected liberals and moderates who wanted desperately for their kids to be back in school, or knew someone who lost everything from business shutdowns. Not to mention that a bunch of people are actively leaving the state due to the schooling situation as well as what I said about businesses.

t00lecaster

Watch the conservative goofballs make up bullshit in response to this. You can set your watch by it.

czaranthony117

I agree to some extent. I remember seeing the 1st petition for the recall way back before the pandemic and I had the same sentiment and did not sign it. However, as we navigated through the pandemic having faced the brute of pure authoritarianism without any obstacle by the state legislature or except a few local sheriff or board of supervisors at the county level... I signed it.

GreyInkling

The brute of pure authoritarianism? Seriously? Do you hear yourself when you say these kinds of lines?

czaranthony117

When you're lockdown in your home and you turn on your local ABC/FOX/NBC affiliate to see what the governor allows you to do in an otherwise "free society," that would be called authoritarianism. Also, observing that local restaurants and businesses were forced to close down if not fined into oblivion over ever changing state mandates set by said governor. I would not know what to otherwise call that. We're libertarians, state authoritarianism by means of the pandemic is what it is, a naked power grab. As libertarians, it was our time to shine. If we didn't stand up to this, then what is the point to our existence?

TheJaycobA

He was caught at a dinner party during the lockdowns and his excuse was that it was an early dinner.... I'm generally in favor of recalls regardless of who/why because I want politicians to know they are on the chopping block. All elected officials should be afraid to lose their jobs.

M3fit

Yet no one went to jail for mask itself . Politicians are hypocrites, nothing new

thedrizzle22

To me, his hypocrisy over the lockdown was the only reason I needed to support ousting him. I gave him a pass for seeing a very deadly populated state (NY) get pretty beat up over COVID. And with the uncertainty over disease transmission, I gave politicians leeway who were overly cautious even if it meant it meant temporary inconvenience (not very libertarian, I know, but this was an unprecedented time). But if you’re gonna lock everyone down, you have to lead by example. Memory serves me right, he also closed wineries but his was able to stay open. Bullshit to the fullest.

bhknb

1/20th the 2021 high speed rail budget. Not only worth it, but likely to create more jobs.

that_tall_fella

I really wish Faluconer stood a decent chance of winning the recall. With Newsom reopening the state, it's look extremely unlikely/almost impossible for him to pull it off.

[deleted]

Hmm I wonder how controversial this recall is here. I would find it highly ironic for people to dismiss it as right-wing lunacy.

dash4385

He going to get re-elected and there going to be a another mass exodus. I am considering leaving NJ but if Murphy gets re-elected then I am 100% out.

dstang67

You should think about SD if you want the freedom, low taxes, and no state income taxes. Also beautiful place to live. With left California 15 years ago, and have never looked back.

t00lecaster

The only problem with SD is the lack of jobs and all the trashy loser republican mindslaves.

dash4385

I am looking south. Tired of the winters so SD probably won’t be the best choice.

t00lecaster

SD also fucking sucks serious ass unless you’re a hardcore conservative hatechristian.

M3fit

This is the way . Can’t beat him , so cause a issue that will cause tax payers hundreds of millions and say look” he did this” Run a good candidate and beat him

The only Republican Governor to not leave Cali in debt , was Reagan , he just attempted to disarm brown people ….. Maybe it’s me , but Gavin making people wear mask in public and private buildings ….. and being a hypocrite about it , doesn’t hurt me feelings . I mean I lived in Texas and a neighbor of mine walked around her house naked , a kid went up to a window and climbed up his bike to look in . She’s on the sex offender list . I don’t give a fuck if you wear a mask , nor does the mandate hurt my feelings

dstang67

So in Texas you cant be nude in your own house? I thought Texas was more free than that. Was she at least good looking.

M3fit

Maybe now , wasnt when I lived there .

M3fit

Yea , he left California in massive debt and is why California went left fast . I like Arnold as a person , but not like a Governor

czaranthony117

Arnold was horrible at negotiating with the state legislature which was supermajority democratic. The make up of the legislature at the time was something like 26/40 seats in the state senate and something like 48/80 seats in the state assembly. He essentially bent to the state legislature and at every end and complied with most if not all their budgetary proposals, including the High Speed Rail Authority, Global Warming Final Solution Bill etc. Currently, the make up of the state legislature is something like: 31/40 D - Senators and maybe 9/40 R - Senators 63/80 D - State Assembly members to maybe 18 R - State Assembly members & 1 independent that left the GOP because of the orange man.... which our boy Jeff Hewit in Riverside tried ousting. Jeff Hewit being one of the most prominent Libertarian elected currently to public office. Had Jeff made it passed our stupid Jungle Primary system, he would have been an effective opponent to that Chad Mayes who currently represents that area in our legislature. I met Gavin in 2018. We had about a 15 min conversation about his moderation record and claimed to be more pro - business than Gov. Schwarzenegger. Given the make up of the current state legislature, he's been anything but.... In comparison, Jerry Brown was much more of a fiscal hawk than his predecessor and his successor.

t00lecaster

Lol republicans don’t have ideas and libertarians don’t play well to the educated.

cosmicmangobear

It should cost $0 to remove a corrupt tyrant.

bluedino44

So you want people to work the elections for free? All volunteer polls, volunteer location, sourcing free paper ballots and free voting machines? Elections cost money, there is no way around that unless you want to move to communism

cosmicmangobear

Ah, the "everything I don't like is communism" argument. How can you defend Newsom and still be a libertarian? You're on the wrong subreddit.

bluedino44

Im not defending Newsom, Im just stating that elections cost money, the price tag to do an election is high but its a necessary cost

cosmicmangobear

You think $215 million is "necessary"? Because it's not. Elections cost so much because the major parties have turned politics into a grift. Sorry to tell you but you're getting ripped off by the government.

CulturalMarksmanism

How would they pull off a free election?

cosmicmangobear

Privately. The cost burden should fall on donors, not taxpayers.

CulturalMarksmanism

Only rich people and corporations would be able to hold recall elections.

cosmicmangobear

They already do. And besides, small dollar donations can be really influential if enough people contribute.

Cali_AnCap

Isn't this shithole giving out millions in a lottery for vaccines? Since when does anyone in this shithole care about the cost of anything?

bhknb

The high speed rail boondoggle budget for 2021 is $4.2 billion.

MoreLibertarianThanU

Anything to keep a dictator in power.

baronmad

Now they care about your money? That is so much bullshit its hard to believe, they dont give a damn about that they care about staying in power so they can ruin California even more and make themselves more powerful and rich in the process.

dstang67

That number seems way out there, but one more give away program by him would eat up even more than that, so go for it. This is the kind of shit that made us leave California and move to SD 15 years ago.
